Can I file FIR at any police station?

Short answer

Yes. Under Zero FIR provisions, any police station must register your FIR regardless of jurisdiction. They will transfer it to the correct station later.

Understanding the issue

A Zero FIR can be filed at any police station in the country, irrespective of where the crime was committed. The police station is obligated to register the FIR and then transfer it to the police station having actual jurisdiction over the area where the offence occurred. This provision under BNSS Section 173 ensures that no time is wasted in registering crimes, especially in urgent situations. The Supreme Court has mandated that no police station can refuse to register a Zero FIR citing lack of jurisdiction. This is particularly useful for crimes committed during travel or in areas where you are unfamiliar with the local police station.
