About this library

Who made this, and why you can check it.

You are about to act on what a website told you about the law. You should know where it comes from, how it is checked, and what it refuses to do.

What this is
  • A free library of what to do in the legal situations ordinary people in India actually land in — an arrest, an FIR that nobody will register, a deposit the landlord is keeping, a salary that stopped, an online fraud.

  • Every page is written to be read once, quickly, by someone who is frightened and not a lawyer. The first thing on the page is the first thing to do.

What this is not
  • It is not legal advice, and it cannot be. Advice means someone qualified has looked at your facts; this is general information about the law. For your own case, see an advocate — and if you cannot afford one, legal aid is free and the number is 15100.

  • It is not a lawyer directory and it does not rank, recommend or advertise any advocate. Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules bars advocates from soliciting work, and we will not build around it.

Where the law comes from
  • The criminal content follows the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, which replaced the IPC, the CrPC and the Evidence Act on 1 July 2024. Where an old IPC section is still the one people know, both are named.

  • The rest draws on the Constitution and the Acts that govern the situation — tenancy, consumer, labour, domestic violence, dowry, cheque dishonour, information technology, motor accidents — and each page names the sections it relies on, so you can check them yourself.

  • Helpline numbers are checked against the ones the government publishes. The retired legal-aid number 1516 is blocked from ever appearing again; the live number is 15100.

How it is kept honest
  • Both languages come from one source, so the Hindi and the English cannot drift apart. The app and this website are generated from the same file; neither is edited on its own.

  • Automated checks run before any change is accepted: every number in a sentence must match between the two languages, every statute named in one must be named in the other, and a retired helpline number fails the build outright. A section number that is right in English and wrong in Hindi cannot get through.

  • If you find something wrong, tell us and it gets fixed at the source, which corrects the app and the website together. A legal-aid site that cannot be corrected is worse than none.

What we never do
  • No advertising, no trackers, no analytics on this website, and nothing about what you read is sold or shared. Reading needs no account and no phone number.

  • No charge, for any page, ever. If a page ever asks you to pay to find out your rights, it is not us.
