What to do if my WhatsApp account is hacked?
Short answer
Immediately log back in to reclaim your account, enable two-step verification, alert your contacts, and report to cybercrime.gov.in.
Understanding the issue
If your WhatsApp is hacked, act fast. First, try to log in again on your phone — WhatsApp allows only one device, so logging in will kick out the hacker. If asked for a verification code, do NOT share it with anyone. Enable two-step verification (Settings > Account > Two-step verification) with a 6-digit PIN. If you cannot regain access, email support@whatsapp.com with subject 'Lost/Stolen: please deactivate my account' and include your phone number in international format. Alert your contacts that your account was compromised so they don't fall for scams. If money was stolen or personal data misused, file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930. Also file an FIR at the nearest police station. Under IT Act Section 66C, identity theft is punishable with up to 3 years imprisonment. Screenshot any suspicious messages or transactions as evidence.
