What if someone shares my intimate images online?
Short answer
This is a criminal offence. File FIR under BNS Section 77 and IT Act Section 66E. File complaint on cybercrime.gov.in.
Understanding the issue
Sharing intimate or private images of a person without their consent is a serious criminal offence in India. Under BNS Section 77 (Voyeurism), capturing or disseminating images of a woman engaged in a private act is punishable with 1-3 years imprisonment for first offence and 3-7 years for subsequent offence. IT Act Section 66E punishes violation of privacy by capturing and publishing private images with up to 3 years imprisonment. IT Act Section 67 covers publishing obscene material electronically. You should: (1) Screenshot the content as evidence, (2) File FIR at nearest police station or cybercrime.gov.in, (3) Report to the platform for immediate removal, (4) Apply to court for injunction to prevent further sharing. The content can be ordered removed by the court, and intermediaries must comply.
