Am I entitled to rent receipts?

Short answer

Yes. If you request, the landlord must provide rent receipts. Receipts are important for HRA tax claims and as proof of tenancy.

Understanding the issue

You have the right to demand rent receipts from your landlord for every payment made. Rent receipts are crucial documents — they serve as proof of tenancy, are required for claiming House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption under Income Tax Act Section 10(13A), and can be used as evidence in any dispute. If rent exceeds ₹5,000 per month, a receipt with revenue stamp is needed for HRA claims. If your landlord refuses to provide receipts, pay rent by bank transfer or cheque which creates its own paper trail. You can also send a legal notice demanding receipts.
