How to file an FIR online in India?
Short answer
Most states allow e-FIR filing through their state police portal or the CCTNS system. For cybercrimes, use cybercrime.gov.in.
Understanding the issue
You can file an FIR online through multiple channels. For cybercrimes, the national portal cybercrime.gov.in accepts complaints 24/7. Many states have their own online FIR systems — for example, Delhi Police has an e-FIR portal, Maharashtra has the Citizen Portal, UP has the UPCOP app. You can also file complaints through the 112 India app. For the online process: register on the portal, fill in the complaint details, upload any evidence (screenshots, documents), and submit. You will receive a reference number. For serious crimes like murder, robbery, or assault, you should visit the police station in person. Remember that under BNSS Section 173, any police station must accept your Zero FIR regardless of jurisdiction — they will later transfer it to the correct station. If any police station refuses to register your FIR, you can approach the Superintendent of Police or file a private complaint before a Magistrate under BNSS Section 223.
