What healthcare benefits am I entitled to under ESI?
Short answer
If your salary is up to 21,000 per month and your employer has 10 or more employees, you get ESI coverage including medical treatment, sickness benefit, maternity benefit, and disability benefit.
Understanding the issue
The Employees' State Insurance (ESI) scheme provides comprehensive healthcare and social security benefits. If your gross salary is up to ₹21,000 per month and your employer has 10 or more employees (20 in some states), you are covered under ESI. Benefits include: full medical treatment for you and your dependents at ESI hospitals and dispensaries; sickness benefit at 70% of wages for up to 91 days; extended sickness benefit for long-term diseases; maternity benefit for 26 weeks; disablement benefit for employment injury; dependent benefit in case of death; funeral expenses; and unemployment allowance. Both employer and employee contribute — employer pays 3.25% and employee pays 0.75% of wages.
