Can I fight a consumer case without a lawyer?

Short answer

Yes. Consumer forums are designed for self-representation. No lawyer is needed. Filing fees are minimal. The process is simpler than regular courts.

Understanding the issue

Consumer forums (now called Consumer Commissions) are specifically designed to be consumer-friendly and you can represent yourself without a lawyer. The process is much simpler than regular courts. Filing fees are minimal: free for claims up to ₹5 lakhs, ₹200 for claims up to ₹10 lakhs, and scaling up for higher amounts. You can file complaints online at edaakhil.nic.in. The three tiers are: District Commission (up to ₹50 lakh), State Commission (₹50 lakh-2 crore), and National Commission (above ₹2 crore). You need to submit a written complaint with copies of bills, warranty cards, correspondence, and proof of defect. The forum typically decides within 3-5 months. No court fees or stamp paper needed — just plain paper.
