Can I get a refund for defective online purchase?

Short answer

Yes. Under Consumer Protection Act, you have the right to refund, replacement, or repair for defective products. E-commerce platforms must accept returns within their stated period.

Understanding the issue

If you receive a defective product from an online purchase, you have the right to seek refund, replacement, or repair under the Consumer Protection Act. E-commerce platforms are required to have a clear return and refund policy as per E-Commerce Rules 2020. For defective products, you can claim refund even after the return window has expired. The platform must provide a customer grievance officer whose details must be displayed on the website. To claim refund: first contact customer support, then file complaint with the grievance officer, and if not resolved within 30 days, file a consumer complaint online at edaakhil.nic.in or at your district consumer forum. You can claim the product cost, shipping charges, and compensation for mental agony.
