Minimum Wages
Understanding the issue
Every employer must pay at least the government-notified minimum wage. The minimum wage varies by state and type of work. Paying less than minimum wage is illegal.
Punishment
Fine up to Rs. 50,000. Repeat offence: imprisonment up to 3 months or fine up to Rs. 1 lakh
Examples
- Employer pays worker Rs. 200/day when the minimum wage is Rs. 400/day. Worker can file complaint with labour commissioner.
