Being Arrested by Police
You or someone you know is being arrested right now
Do this now
- 01Stay calm — do NOT resist arrest physically, but clearly state 'I want to know the reason for my arrest'
- 02Ask the police officer to show their ID and the arrest warrant (if applicable)
- 03You have the RIGHT to remain silent — do NOT sign any document without reading it
- 04Demand that police inform your family member or friend about the arrest — this is your legal right
- 05Ask for a lawyer immediately — if you cannot afford one, ask for free legal aid through NALSA (call 15100)
- 06Police MUST produce you before a Magistrate within 24 hours — remind them of this right
- 07Do NOT confess anything to police — confessions to police are NOT admissible in court
Do NOT do this
- Do NOT physically resist arrest — it can lead to additional charges
- Do NOT sign any blank paper or document you have not read fully
- Do NOT make any confession or admission to the police
- Do NOT allow police to take your phone without proper authorization
